About Me

Bette: Bette sees herself as a visionary artist and a conduit for universal energies to come to life in her abstract paintings. She gives form to invisible dreams through expansive colors that flow into unique patterns and spiritual landscapes. Her abstract paintings contain metaphysical messages that reflect her studies of literature, the humanities, spirituality, and Jungian psychology. Bette uses her art to express the longings of her heart and soul and for the healing that comes from total immersion in the creative process. Bette is also an art therapist, counselor, and life coach who often uses art as an avenue for opening people to their own creative energy, healing, and discovery. Using art for inspiration, she seamlessly blends her training as an art therapist with her love of metaphysics in a way that awakens others to their creative potential.

An Empty Handed Leap Into the Void

This miracle called Life

is too big

too unfathomable…

It converges too intensely

leaving no corner to hide in,

no place to go.

No choice but to stay…

Stay for the tears and the love in my heart…

Stay for the brief flashes of illumination…

and for the solid frustration of relationships.

and for families and lovers

and babies yet to be born…

This thread winds down a path…

I catch only a glimmer here and there

as it turns,

Seeing it most clearly in turbulent transitions

when there are only questions.

When I am alone after crisis…

In quiet moments of reflection…

There are thoughts that seem to be connected,

relationships between divergent metaphors...

I think of Melville, Thoreau…Sylvia Plath…the poets innumerable who speak for our shadows and our pain…

I am moved by their honesty

and there are compassionate tears for all of us.

They give me hope

and a possible way to hold the vast array

of intrusions upon my mind…

A clamoring of souls longing to be set free…

The Unknowable is in motion

pregnant and empty

It brings to the surface my deepest fears--and yet

it calls forth fertile dreams

that are held in the blankness.

To live as I know

calls for, "an empty handed leap into the void."

Can they contain my longing?

feelings and dreams

Daisies on the Mountain

Blankets of yellow against the green..

a magical meadow high on the mountain…truly a place where gods abide.

Perhaps each pine a wanderer

who decided to rest from labors amid other of his fellows.

Content now to watch

the wanderings of such as I.

Words are not adequate

to express the longing in my soul…

sparked so strongly this morning amidst the sun-streaked pines.

The long gentle grasses grow softly at their feet, warming their roots

and mine in this most blissful of days.

Edges

In restless dreams
I ride on the heels of chaos and resist the day.

Skirting the edges of day
Gazing down
the sea looms as far as my eye can see.

There is an endless creating…
diving into the soup,

finding a jewel to bring to a temporary surface.

Light dances
falling gently
in a desert dawn.

I move slowly to admit an aging white friend.
Shaking off her own images from the night
She is a mirror.

Is it death I fear
or the possibility that I won't have enough time
to do what I should have done decades ago?

If I no longer fear death
then might I act as outrageously as I can imagine?
I keep asking, "why not?"

Every task seems to be weighed
against time or energy .

Will there be enough time to work out the dark places
in my soul?
Enough time to find my honest voice
in the lines I parade across the pages
or
the colors that dance across a canvas?

Is there enough time
or enough strength
to find what is deep and true and real about me?
Do I have the courage to be the kind of human that I know is possible?

The aging face that greets me
is a yellow light of warning….
